INFORMATION
On Activities At The
2006 INTERNATIONAL
ROUND TABLE CONFERENCE

Office of the Secretary/Treasurer

The 26th Annual International Security Round Table Conference was held at Highlander Lodge in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia on April 6 thru 8, 2006. Unquestionably this was the most interesting and informative conference to date. The Academy has always strived to keep its members informed and current regarding security education and training and the 2006 Round Table rates as the best ever.

The subject “Katrina – What Went Right” was authentic and based on reality. CAPT Anthony Christiana and Lowell Burmaster lived and breathed every aspect of planning, implementation and surviving a major disaster. Their oral presentation and photos took you to Gretna, Louisiana, letting you experience their apprehension, fears, plans, sorrows and joys.

Everyone is concerned about disasters – natural and terrorist. Today, this hot issue vibrates throughout our country. Proper training leads to effective implementation. Never has this been more obviously displayed than in Gretna, Louisiana before, during, and after Katrina.

The Gretna Police Department was the only organization in the area to have an effective disaster plan. When alerted to the hurricane’s force and impending arrival, the Gretna Police Department immediately began to put into practice each phase of its disaster plan; such as, selecting secure locations, dealing with horrendous obstacles, supporting and protecting the property of its citizens, caring for rescue workers (food, shelter, clothing, baths etc), providing for pets left behind, and, unfortunately, some dangerous looters. During all of this the Gretna Police Department, with some assistance from the Nine Lives Associates, supplied itself and other municipalities with day to day necessities. Emotions of pride in the Academy vibrated throughout the room as CAPT Christiana described each day - each hour.

Professor John I. Kostanoski presented an updated report on the “Journal of Security Education.” This prestigious publication is the Academy’s Journal which contains valuable and informative articles from noted professionals regarding our industry. It keeps us abreast of events that affect our lives in security education.

Professor Kostanoski discussed some of the Journal’s previously published articles and upcoming topics in the next issue. Please check the Journal’s web site and/or the ASET’s Journal link at the top of this page.
